At the beginning of February, 2019 marks 100 years for Cummins – a milestone I am proud of. Just think, it all started with Clessie Lyle Cummins, who at the age of 11, built his first steam engine in rural Indiana. It didn’t stop there. With the support of William G. Irwin, Cummins Engine Co. was founded on the ground breaking technology at the time – diesel.

Fast forward 100 years and we are at another significant juncture – embracing groundbreaking technologies of our time – lithium-ion, fuel cells, and data. From the very first diesel engine to our latest innovation in electrification, our commitment to provide innovative and dependable power solutions for our customers remains the same. We continue to lead in our industry.

Our roots are in Columbus, Indiana, where manufacturing began in 1919 in the Cerealine Building, which today is surrounded by our Corporate Office Building. In 1925, operations were moved to a building at 5th and Wilson streets, which would become the main facility of Cummins Engine Company, today known as the Columbus Engine Plant (CEP). One hundred years later, Cummins serves customers through our network of 500 company-owned and independent distributor facilities and approximately 7,500 dealer locations in more than 190 countries and territories.

We have accomplished a lot together during our first hundred years. We deliver for our customers, prioritize sustainability and invest in our communities. Our leaders, defined our company and our unwavering values. These ideals drive us. You have committed to living our values day in and day out. Not only in your work, but in surrounding communities.

As we celebrate 100 years, I reflect on how it started with Clessie embracing diesel for new applications including running diesel-powered cars, trucks and buses across the country to prove its dependability. Cummins leaders have since embraced new trends and thinking, including emission standards, a challenge to many, but one we embraced and found solutions. We continually turn challenges into opportunities. This mindset is what will power us for the next 100 years.

One thing is certain, the world will change. I am more convinced than ever we will embrace this change, and turn our challenges of today into opportunities that will carry us forward for the next 100 years.
